Joliet wind turbines

The Cyclone 20kW is a medium to large scale wind turbine designed for large domestic power supply or commercial users.

The Cyclone 20kW wind turbine is based on large wind turbine technology making it a perfect choice for commercial use or for small private wind farm applications.

The installation shown here uses a standard 18 meter free standing mast.

Joliet wind turbines are supplied with an electronic controller system which conditions the power produced for battery storage or grid supply through an inverter. The controller also processes wind speed and direction data to position the turbine in the optimum upwind attitude.

Small wind turbines offer up to 20kW and can be easily erected to operate effectively in most areas of the world. Approximately 60% of the Earth’s surface has enough wind for small turbines to generate electricity.

options...

Joliet wind turbines have four basic components.  The turbine generator itself, together with the blade assembly. This is the 'masthead' part of the wind turbine that produces electricity when turning. The tower which supports the wind turbine at an appropriate height. The wind turbine controller, which is the 'heart' of the system. The controller monitors wind speed and direction allowing the turbine to automatically adjust its position to make best advantage of the wind. The controller also conditions the 'raw' electricity produced into stable DC current required to charge batteries or supply an inverter. The final component of a wind turbine system is the inverter. The inverter turns DC power produced by the wind turbine into AC power suitable for supplying household or industrial equipment at 220 volts or 440 volts (three phase)

Tower options

Joliet wind turbines

The Cyclone 20kW wind turbine is installed on a sectional 18 meter free standing tower. Free standing towers require a small crane for installation. The recent development of a hydraulic 'self erecting' free standing tower allows Joliet wind turbines to be raised and lowered without the need for a crane. Joliet towers are hot dip galvanised for increased protection from the elements.

Controller options

Joliet supply on grid or off grid wind turbine controllers depending on the installation requirements.

Inverter options

The correct choice of inverter depends the installation type. For grid connected systems Joliet provide a 24kW grid compatible inverter package. For off grid (battery charging installations) Joliet provide a 360vdc/220vac inverter.  Inverters are available in single or three phase options.

performance...

Joliet 20kW Cyclone wind turbine

The instantaneous power production of this wind turbine is the actual power it produces at any one time. The power produced increases as wind speed increases. This wind turbine has an automatic three stage shutdown procedure as wind speeds become too strong for power production. As the graph below shows, production drops off as maximum capacity is exceeded, slowing the wind turbine by turning away from the wind. This three stage braking function protects the wind turbine from over speed whilst continuing to produce power during strong wind conditions.

The average total annual output of a Joliet 20kW wind turbine is the power produced in kWh during 12 months at a fixed average wind speed. The example below shows the annual production for this turbine at a wind speed of six meters per second (around 21Kilometers per Hour). You can download a detailed table of power production at different wind speeds by clicking here.

installation...

Installing a Joliet wind turbine is not complicated, the installation process is carried out in three basic stages. The foundations depend on the tower type chosen and require a hole with a trench to carry power cables to the consumer. Foundation anchors to support the tower are supplied by Joliet and are set into the poured concrete base. Once set, the foundation is ready to receive the tower.

The assembly of the wind turbine is carried out on the ground. Once the turbine and tower sections are assembled the complete unit is raised to a vertical position (depending on tower type) and fixed to the foundation anchors.

The electrical connections can now be made linking the turbine to the controller, wind speed and direction monitors, inverters or batteries and finally to the consumer.

ordering your wind turbine

Joliet 20kW wind turbine systems are manufactured to customer order. The manufacture and assembly process requires a delay of approximately eight weeks. When you are ready to order your wind turbine please contact us with your requirements and shipping address. You will receive a detailed quotation indicating a delivery date, delivery cost and payment conditions. Please note that Joliet do not supply batteries which are readily available from local suppliers.
